Short Grandpa Quotes: 12 Sourced Lines for Cards, Captions and His Birthday

In March 1871 Victor Hugo's son Charles died suddenly in Bordeaux, leaving two small children, Georges and Jeanne, whom their grandfather adored. Six years later the most combative writer in France published a whole book about them, L'Art d'être grand-père (The Art of Being a Grandfather, 1877). One poem lists forty years of fighting emperors and kings, then ends in eight words: he has been beaten by a little child. That is what most short grandpa quotes are trying to say, and Hugo said it best.

Below are 12 short grandpa quotes, each checked against the text it comes from: three from Victor Hugo (two poems and a scene from Les Misérables), two from Tennyson, and one each from Browning, Shakespeare, Marcus Aurelius and Little Women, plus three Bible verses. They are grouped by what you need them for: a birthday card, a note from a grandchild, a line in his own voice, a gentle joke, a hard year, a verse. If you need one right now, Proverbs 20:29 fits almost any card: "the beauty of old men is the grey head."

Short grandpa quotes for his birthday card

The best birthday lines for a grandfather do not pretend he is young. They say that age is worth something, which is what most grandfathers would rather hear.

"Grow old along with me! / The best is yet to be" — Robert Browning, "Rabbi Ben Ezra", Dramatis Personae (1864)

Browning put these words in the mouth of Abraham ibn Ezra, a twelfth-century Jewish scholar, and the poem goes on to argue that old age is "the last of life, for which the first was made." It is usually printed on anniversary cards, and John Lennon borrowed it for his song "Grow Old with Me", but it reads just as well from a grandchild: you are asking him to keep going, and promising that the best part is ahead. Write it inside a card for a 70th or 80th birthday and add one sentence of your own about what you plan to do together this year.

"Old age hath yet his honour and his toil" — Alfred Tennyson, "Ulysses" (written 1833, published in Poems, 1842)

In Tennyson's poem the aged Ulysses, back home in Ithaca and restless, speaks to the old sailors who fought beside him: "you and I are old." The line answers anyone who thinks a retired man has nothing left to do. It suits the grandfather who still fixes the fence, keeps the books for the church or drives the grandchildren to practice, and it is short enough for the front of a card or a cake topper.

“Old age hath yet his honour and his toil.” — Alfred Tennyson, Ulysses (1842)

From a grandson or granddaughter: the "what he taught me" line

One of the oldest surviving thank-yous to a grandfather opens a book of philosophy still read today. When the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius began his private notebook, the first thing he wrote down was what he owed his grandfather.

"From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper." — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book I.1, translated by George Long (1862)

Marcus was about three when his father died, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandfather, Marcus Annius Verus. The whole first book of the Meditations is a list of people and what each one taught him, and the grandfather comes first. (Long prints "I learned" in square brackets, because the Greek leaves the verb understood.) It makes the best model there is for a note from a grandchild: name him, then name the one thing you learned.

“From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper.” — Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book I, tr. George Long (1862)

You can borrow Marcus's pattern directly. These are our own fill-in examples, not quotes, so change them until they sound like your family:

  • From my grandpa I learned to measure twice and to apologise once.
  • From Grandpa: patience, card tricks, and how to lose at chess gracefully.
  • From my grandfather I learned that a promise is a debt.
  • From Pop: early mornings, strong coffee, and never leaving a friend stranded.

Keep it to one line and one or two specific things. A grandson writing "you taught me to fish" gives him more than a paragraph of general praise, because it shows you remember the day itself. Short lines in a grandfather's own voice

Some of the warmest short grandpa quotes are spoken by grandfathers, not about them. They work as captions under a photo of him with a baby, or as a line he can write in a grandchild's card himself.

"Ah ! les fils de nos fils nous enchantent" ("Ah, the sons of our sons enchant us") — Victor Hugo, "L'autre", L'Art d'être grand-père (1877); translation ours

The poem begins "Viens, mon George", come here, my George: Hugo is talking to his grandson. The lines that follow call grandchildren the return of roses, spring and daylight to a gloomy old house. In French the line is short enough for a photo caption, and the English works for a grandfather who is not shy about saying it.

"I had a little girl once, with eyes like these. God bless you, my dear!" — Louisa May Alcott, Little Women, chapter 6, "Beth Finds the Palace Beautiful" (1868)

Old Mr. Laurence, Laurie's gruff grandfather, has just told shy Beth March she may come and play his piano whenever she likes. When she squeezes his hand in thanks, he strokes the hair off her forehead, kisses her, says this line "in a tone few people ever heard", and hurries away. Later in the chapter, after he sends her a little piano of her own and she thanks him with a hug, Alcott writes that he felt "as if he had got his own little granddaughter back again." The line is for a grandfather who sees someone he loved in a grandchild's face, and it is especially kind in a card for a granddaughter named after a relative.

"Marius! My little Marius! my child! my well-beloved son!" — Victor Hugo, Les Misérables, vol. V, book 3, chapter 12, "The Grandfather" (1862), translated by Isabel F. Hapgood (1887)

M. Gillenormand, the proud royalist grandfather in Les Misérables, quarrelled with his grandson Marius over politics and spent years pretending not to miss him. When Marius is carried home from the barricades half dead and finally opens his eyes, the old man cries these words and faints. It is the line for a grandfather who has made peace after a family quarrel, or for the moment a grandson comes home after a long time away.

Funny short grandpa quotes, the gentle kind

Grandpa humour works best when he is in on the joke. Both lines below were written by grandfathers or about old men who are proud of themselves, so they tease without insulting.

"Et me voilà vaincu par un petit enfant." ("And here I am, beaten by a little child.") — Victor Hugo, "Victor, sed victus", L'Art d'être grand-père (1877); translation ours

The title is a Latin pun on Hugo's first name: "Victor, but vanquished." For twenty-five lines he boasts that he defied emperors, kings and false gods and never bowed his head; the last line hands the whole fight to a small child. In the book the poem comes straight after one about baby Jeanne learning to talk. Hugo was 75 when the book came out. Put this under a photo of a grandfather on the floor playing horses, or on the card that goes with a new grandchild's first visit.

"Therefore my age is as a lusty winter, / Frosty but kindly." — William Shakespeare, As You Like It, act 2, scene 3 (c. 1599; First Folio, 1623)

The speaker is Adam, an old servant (he says he is "almost fourscore", nearly eighty) who insists on following young Orlando into exile. Just before this line he explains that he stayed strong because in his youth he never touched "hot and rebellious liquors." He is not a grandfather in the play, but no line describes a white-haired, stubborn, warm old man better. It is a good birthday joke for a grandpa who still insists on carrying the heavy bags.

When he is slowing down

Many people searching for a short grandpa quote are writing to a grandfather who is ill, has moved into care or has lost his wife. One line from the same Tennyson poem was written for exactly that feeling.

"Tho' much is taken, much abides" — Alfred Tennyson, "Ulysses" (written 1833, published 1842)

Ulysses is admitting that he and his men are no longer the strength that "moved earth and heaven", and in the same breath saying that something remains. It honours a grandfather without pretending nothing has changed. Use it in a get-well card, in a note after a hard diagnosis, or for a birthday spent in hospital. If you are writing after a grandparent's death, our page on losing a grandma or grandpa collects lines for that.

Short Bible verses for grandpa

Three verses from the King James Bible (1611) speak directly to old men and are short enough for a card, a frame or a headstone.

"The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head." — Proverbs 20:29, King James Bible (1611)

The proverb sets two kinds of honour side by side and does not rank them: the young have strength, the old have the grey hair that shows how long they have lived. It is the verse to use when a grandfather complains about getting old. The second half works alone if space is short.

“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.” — Proverbs 20:29, King James Bible (1611)
"With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding." — Job 12:12, King James Bible (1611)

Job says this while arguing with friends who think they understand his suffering better than he does. Taken on its own, it is a plain statement that long life brings understanding, which makes it a fitting line for a grandfather people go to for advice.

"They shall still bring forth fruit in old age" — Psalm 92:14, King James Bible (1611)

The psalm compares good people to a palm tree and a cedar of Lebanon that keep flourishing. It fits a grandfather who gardens, or any retirement or 90th-birthday card. The verse continues "they shall be fat and flourishing", which most families leave out.

How to make a short line sound like your grandpa

  1. Pick by situation first, author second. A Bible verse suits a churchgoing grandfather; Shakespeare's "lusty winter" suits one who laughs at himself. The table above sorts them by use.
  2. Add his name or the name you call him. "Grandpa, the best is yet to be" lands harder than the bare quote. Gramps, Pop, Papa, Grandad: use whatever the family actually says.
  3. Add one specific memory in your own words. One sentence about a real day (the fishing trip, the burnt pancakes) does more than a second quote.
  4. Credit the source. Write "— Tennyson" or "— Proverbs 20:29" under the line. Grandfathers of that generation often notice, and it tells him you chose it carefully.
  5. Keep captions under ten words. For Instagram or a photo book, use the short forms in the table; save the full versions for cards.

Short grandpa lines we left out

Two of the most shared short grandpa sayings are missing here on purpose. "A grandfather is someone with silver in his hair and gold in his heart" and "Grandfathers are just antique little boys" are all over mugs and Pinterest pins, usually signed "Unknown" or not signed at all. We searched for an author or a first printing for both and found none, so we cannot tell you who wrote them. You are free to use them, but do not add a famous name to them: unsigned lines tend to pick up false attributions as they spread. Our page on misattributed family quotes shows how that happens.

Questions people ask about grandpa quotes

What are some cute short quotes about grandpa?

Victor Hugo's "And here I am, beaten by a little child" (1877) and Mr. Laurence's "I had a little girl once, with eyes like these" from Little Women (1868) are the two warmest short lines here. Both come from grandfathers talking about grandchildren.

What are some funny quotes from grandpas?

Shakespeare's old Adam calls his age "a lusty winter, frosty but kindly" (As You Like It, act 2, scene 3), and Hugo's poem "Victor, sed victus" jokes that a man who defied emperors surrendered to a toddler. Both tease gently, so they suit a birthday card he will read aloud.

What is a short Bible verse for a grandfather?

Proverbs 20:29: "the beauty of old men is the grey head." Job 12:12 ("With the ancient is wisdom") and Psalm 92:14 ("They shall still bring forth fruit in old age") also work on a card.

What is a short word for grandpa?

Grandpa is itself the short, informal form of grandfather. Families also use Gramps, Grandad, Pop or Pop-Pop and Papa. In a card or caption, use whichever name the grandchildren actually call him.
